According to Atlas Van Nederland Tropische sheet 21 (1938) Merapi Volcano lies in the geographical position of 7 degrees 32.5 ’south latitude and 110 degrees 26.5′ East Longitude. With a height of 2914 m above sea level. Is at its border crossing transverse fault Yogyakarta and Central Java and Java cross Longitudinal fault . Erupted more than 37 times, the biggest in 1972 which killed 3000 people. Last erupted on Tuesday November 22, 1994, with  more than 5000 people died.

To understand the mythology of Mount Merapi, it can not be separated from the philosophy of the Royal Palace of Yogyakarta City as the center. The city is divided by an imaginary axis connecting the South Sea, Parangkusumo – Stage Krapyak – Royal Palaces – Tugu Pal White and Mount Merapi. Philosophically this is divided into two aspects, namely Jagat Ageng ( macro cosmos ) and Jagat Agung Alit ( micro cosmos )

Jagat alit, which break down the process of beginning-end life and human life with all the straight behavior  lives and the nature of human life, described by the City Planning City of Yogyakarta as the King at that time. Planning town ran from south to north Krapyak stage begins, ending at the monument the White Pal. This emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between the God and human.
