This temple lies on the slope of mount Ungaran, about 900 meters above sea level. Gedong Songo (nine buildings), a group of small 8th century Hindu Javanese temple.

This temple complex was originally called the temple “Gedong Pitoe” ( seven Building ) because at that time was found by Rafles only consists of seven groups temple. But then found the two groups, so-called temple Gedong Songo temple. said Gedong (Java) means the building Songo means nine, so Gedong Songo Temple is nine given by a group of nine temples, so now there are only five groups of temples that still complete, while the other temple had collapsed and only a foundation or base.
The fifth group of temples is located split, starting from Group I which is at the bottom to Group V is located at the top. All five buildings have been renovated temple by the Archeological Department.
Group I and II have been restored in the year 1928 -1929 and 1930 -1931, while Group III, IV and V in 1977 -1983.
