Gedongsongo temple

This temple lies on the slope of mount Ungaran, about 900 meters above sea level. Gedong Songo (nine buildings), a group of small 8th century Hindu Javanese temple.

Enshrinement Gedong Songo temple complex which is composed of nine groups of temples. The whole building enshrinement Gedong Songo made of andesite stone. This temple complex was originally called the temple “Gedong Pitoe” ( seven Building ) because at that time was found by Rafles only consists of seven groups temple. But then found the two groups, so-called temple Gedong Songo temple. said Gedong (Java) means the building Songo means nine,  so Gedong Songo Temple is nine given by a group of nine temples, so now there are only five groups of temples that still complete, while the other temple had collapsed and only a foundation or base.
The fifth group of temples is located split, starting from Group I which is at the bottom to Group V is located at the top. All five buildings have been renovated temple by the Archeological Department.

Group I and II have been restored in the year 1928 -1929 and 1930 -1931, while Group III, IV and V in 1977 -1983.
