Java as the center of art and culture in Indonesia. There are many kinds of art and culture performances and still exist which are continuously and performanced nowdays. These art and culture performances in connection with tradition or religion and they are offered in regularly everyday.
Ramayana Ballet
Ramayana is the romantic story depict about love story between Rama and Shinta. It is taken from Hindu epos. Ramayana is the most popular cultural performance in Jogja
Jathilan ( Horse Dance )
Jatilan is one of the traditional folk dance. This attraction is dominated magig power and accompanied by traditional music. The supernatural power will be demonstrated when the dancer go in to trance by eating glass, razor blades and so on.
Wayang
Wayang is an Indonesia word for theather. And the most wayang performances is wayang kulit ( leather puppet shadow ). The story of wayang is taken from the past story of Mahabarata and it represents of human life.
Unesco designited wayang kulit as a master piece of Oral and intangible heritage of humanity on 7 November 2003.
Gamelan, the Javanese Orchestra
Gamelan is the music created by integrating voices of gong, kenong and other Javanese music instruments. Soft music that reflects the life harmony of Javanese people will soon greet and calm the soul down once someone is listening to it.
Royal Classical Dance
The Sultan’s Palace (Kraton) has for centuries been considered as the center of Javanese art and culture in particularly the art of dancing and traditional music (karawitan) and in fact many of the Royal Dances are choreographed by the Sultans over the generations. These royal dances are performed within the court on special events or ritual ceremonies, such as to commemorate the Anniversary of Sultan (tinggalan dalem), the Crowning of Sultan (jumenengan dalem), Wedding Party of Sultan’s Family, official of formal ceremonies and others
Mahakarya Borobudur Colossal Dance
Mahakarya Borobudur colossal dance is held three or four times a year. It takes place in open stage of Aksobya right on the foot of Borobudur temple. This danced-drama is created by some artists from Indonesian Art Academy-Solo which takes episode about Borobudur temple development in Syailendra dynasty in 8th century.
